| Political: Father Government
I was watching a certain video that made a very good illustration. Our current government is very much like a father to everyone in the country. Except, instead of wanting their children to grow up into responsible, free, and mature adults, it wants to keep us all as children! This way our every want and desire is placidly met and we don't have a care in the world! Do we need health care? That's okay, Daddy Gov will give that, too. Don't have a job? Daddy Gov will give you one or, just give you a nice check every month for being alive! What a deal. Need a good education? Daddy Gov will send you right where you need to go in one of his very own indoctrination centers... Um... I mean, 'Higher Education Centers.' Keeping us as children always reliant upon Daddy Gov for our every need will deprive us of our liberties and responsibilities & will also keep Daddy Gov in power, with our money and hordes of people trusting and reliant upon him. As a politician is there any other way you'd want things?

| Spiritual: Doing All Things Through Christ
Philip. 4:13 -- "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me." Many of us know this verse & remember it well when we come to a task that seems too big for us to handle! 'I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me,' we remind ourselves, mentally and spiritually preparing for the task. But wait just a moment-- read that phrase again:
"I can do all things through Him who strengthens me." Do you?
This statement is not meant to be only for the hard times! Even look at Paul's reflection right before this assertion, along with the hard times (surviving with humble means, in hunger, & suffering need), he mentions living in prosperity, being filled, & having abundance (Philip. 4:13)! Yet when we are in these times, we do not think about doing 'these things' through Christ who strengthens us. We are very satisfied to do it all in our own abilities & strengths, not purposefully but in practice--ignoring the role of Christ's strength that is to be with us as we do this!
Now you might say, "I don't need to do that, I can do this on my own, why should I do it through His strength?" And indeed, the end result of your work would likely be a strong product or result! You have the ability 'on your own' to do it well! But, imagine the difference it would make in your life if everything you did was done through the strength of Christ? The end result may come out appearing the same, but what else would happen?
Spiritually--you would begin to learn what it means to abide in Christ (John 15), or as Brother Lawrence put it, "Practicing the Presence of God."
Your ability to hear the voice of Christ in your daily life would drastically increase!
Your inner joy, peace, & confidence would no longer be founded on your own abilities--but on Christs.
- When the 'hard times' come, you'd be more ready for them than ever before, it would be like a large wave rolling under you in contrast to the crest of the wave crashing on top of you--for you've already waded out into the mercies of God and no longer rest at the border-line of the shore!
This is just scratching the surface! What wonders in our relationship with God will come about through such a change in life focus? My prayer is that each of you will dive in to find this very thing out!

| Spiritual: More than a "Yes/No/Wait God" A Reflection on Prayer "God answers prayer, but it's not always 'Yes,' sometimes it is 'No' or 'Wait.'" How many of you have heard this before? Throughout my years in church I've heard this type of explanation, yet as I mature more in my faith I see it as inadequate for a healthy holistic view of prayer. Indeed God will answer our 'yes/no' prayers in this manner, but... Why would we limit God to 'Yes/No' prayers? Remember the great prayers of Abraham and Moses, when they conversed with God. There was no silly 'yes/no' limitation on God! God was not a cosmic 8-Ball or fortune telling machine, limited to two options (or a third, if you consider 'wait' as different)--I put in prayer and "Voila!" Out comes your answer--limited to a clear yes/no or maybe, of course.
Seriously, though, what type of friend do you have where your conversations are limited to 'yes/no' questions?
Good afternoon! How as your day today? -- Yes. What do you think about the marriage debate? -- No. What is the meaning of all this? -- Wait.
This doesn't happen in our person-to-person communication, so why should we so limit God? When limiting God's prayer-answers to 'Yes/No' questions, we are severely handicapping our relationship with God and through teaching this alone as a way God answers--we are enabling others to hold the same bad prayer-life habit.
Our God is so much more than a simple 'Yes/No/Wait' God. My prayer for you is that you begin to see this real relationship you can have with Him and see a total renewal in how you speak with and listen to God.

| Historical Reflection: Those Who Do Not Learn From History... The Barbary Pirates
This whole problem with pirates from Africa is not a new thing. As a nation we struggled against this in the past. See some basic information about that HERE. When Thomas Jefferson was president many nations merely paid tribute to these pirates to avoid conflicts. Jefferson & the rest of the US was tired of this game and waged war against them. Several decisive victories were won against these pirates. In April 1805 we victoriously raided their stronghold of Tripoli (remember the Marine's song line, "From the shores of Tripoli"...). After a bit the pirates got bold again, thinking we were weakened by the War of 1812, and started their same old nonsense. We responded as before and with a fleet of 10 ships led by veterans of the first Barbary Wars, we captured many of the pirates' ships and once again had a decisive victory.
So, how should we handle the pirate problem today, do you think? . . .

| Political: Enemies w/Missiles & Our Budget Cuts Will wonders never cease?
I find it slightly disturbing that in the face of N. Korea launching it's first missile our government is cutting our missile defense budget. Isn't that a bit counter-productive? As our enemies produce such technology more and more, shouldn't we produce our own technologies to counter it? All the more when these enemies are not the type to care for our 'rules of war!' Just a thought...
